Abstract

This study examined how employee communication relates to perceived employee efficiency in Oruk Anam Local Government Council Area. Specifically, it explored the communication channels used by employees, prevailing directions of information flow, and employees’ perceptions of communication in relation to task completion and workplace coordination. The manuscript reports responses from 371 employees and describes the use of a structured questionnaire. Descriptive findings were presented as frequencies and percentages, with a Pearson product–moment correlation analysis also reported. WhatsApp and instant messaging were selected most frequently as the principal communication channel (32.3%), while digital platforms were the most frequently reported means of circulating official information (25.6%). Telephone calls were the leading channel for urgent matters (37.7%). Downward communication was the most frequently identified direction of information flow (40.4%), followed by lateral communication (32.3%). Regarding task completion, 37.7% of respondents rated employee communication as moderately effective and 35.0% as very effective. Improved teamwork (29.6%) and faster decision-making (24.3%) were the most frequently selected contributions of communication to employee efficiency. In addition, 43.1% perceived a strong overall relationship between communication and efficiency. The findings indicate that employees attach importance to communication for coordinating work, exchanging instructions and supporting collaboration. Strengthening timely information sharing and opportunities for staff feedback may therefore support more effective administration, although the findings represent employees’ reported perceptions.
